AJC: City celebrates 60th, 75th anniversaries of public safety integration
It is never easy being the first or breaking barriers, but the Atlanta Police Department's “First 8” and Atlanta Fire and Rescue Department’s "First 16" did both. In April 2023, the City of Atlanta commemorated the 75th anniversary of the integration of APD by 8 African American officers and the 60th anniversary of the integration of AFRD by 16 African-American firefighters.
