"The future of the city of bright; the future of Atlanta fire rescue is bright."
The Atlanta Fire and Rescue Department safeguards residents and visitors across an area spanning over 135 square miles, which includes the world’s busiest airport, 23 miles of rapid transit, and 60 miles of interstate highways. On average, the department responds to 100,000 calls annually. Interestingly, over 60% of these calls are for EMS services, while less than a quarter are fire-related. The Atlanta Fire and Rescue Department’s mission is to provide prompt, quality services to stakeholders that promote safety and well-being, enhance sustainability, and enrich the quality of life through professional development and dedication to service. Atlanta Fire Rescue strives for excellence in emergency preparedness and response to enhance our customer-focused, innovative role as industry leaders while overcoming expanding risks.
The men and women of the Atlanta Fire and Rescue Department are thrilled with the development of Atlanta’s Public Safety Training Center. After working out of facilities that had been condemned, we look forward to training in a world-class facility.
“The lines between police and fire are now officially blurred. There is no such thing as a solely fire event or a police event.” Chief Roderick M. Smith
The Public Safety Training Center will enhance the lives of the citizens of Atlanta. People don't know who's coming when they dial 911, they just assume that somebody's going to come fast and they're going to be well trained. Our initial training takes 12 to 14 months. The first 6 months is fire training and the rest of it is EMS training or EMT training up to the advanced level.
The men and women of AFRD are committed to delivering best in class service to its community. AFRD continues to develop non-emergency, innovative ways to serve its community, such as with the following programs: SPOTS (Safe Spots off the Streets), GOHS (Governor's Office of Highway Safety) Car Seat Program, and Senior Link, Fire Education Outreach programs.
The department places an emphasis on community engagement and education ranging from smoke alarms to car seats. Additionally, we offer cooling centers during heat waves.
